Zhang Yiming, born April 1, 1983, in Fujian Province, is the founder of ByteDance, the global technology giant behind blockbuster apps like TikTok and Toutiao. An engineer by training, Zhang is renowned for his deep thinking, long-term vision, and pioneering the use of artificial intelligence to revolutionize content discovery and distribution.
Born to civil servant parents, Zhang grew up in the city of Longyan. He graduated from Nankai University in 2005 with a degree in Software Engineering. His early career included stints at the travel startup Kuxun and Microsoft before he embarked on his own entrepreneurial path, founding the real estate portal 99fang in 2009.
In 2012, driven by the insight that algorithms could deliver information more efficiently than human editors, he founded ByteDance.
